Set within the lush landscape of The Rest Eco Estate in Nelspruit, The Rest Residence is a 480m² home designed for a retiring client who wanted a modern, grounded sanctuary. The brief was clear: balance luxury and functionality, allow comfortable single-level living, and keep the generosity of a family home for when children and grandchildren visit.

The Client's Vision

This four-bedroom residence includes a main bedroom on both the ground and first floor, so the home adapts as the owners' needs change. Around the private zones sit generous shared spaces, including a home cinema, pyjama lounge and gym, creating a home that works equally well for quiet days and full-house holidays.

Designing on a Steep Eco-Estate Site

The house sits on a steep, compact site in one of Mpumalanga's most stringent eco estates. From the outset, the architecture was shaped by respect for the terrain.

The home is anchored into the hillside with retaining walls and a stepped layout that limits excavation while framing panoramic views of the Lowveld. To satisfy the estate's 50-page design code, every element, from roof forms to the material palette, was designed in the estate's Lowveld architectural style: soft, natural tones and buildings that sit quietly in the landscape.

One rule allowed only 20% of the roof to be flat. Rather than fight it, we used bold cantilevers, deep overhangs and crisp horizontal lines to keep a sleek, modern identity within the guidelines.

Materials Chosen for Performance

The estate's restrictions called for natural, subdued finishes, and that limitation became a creative opportunity.

  • Insulation under the slab and in the roof to keep the interior comfortable in the hot Lowveld climate

  • Low-E double-glazed windows so large glass openings don't overheat the home

  • Energy-efficient LED strip lighting that integrates with the home's inverter and solar system

  • Neutral façade tones, corrugated roofing and natural stone that echo the colours of the surrounding bushveld

Indoor–Outdoor Living

Perched near the crest of the estate, the house captures sweeping views across Nelspruit's valleys. 2.55m-high sliding doors and expansive glazing connect every main space to the landscape.

The pool terrace is slightly raised, so it appears to float above the slope, blurring the line between inside and out. Indigenous landscaping wraps the building and invites birdlife right up to the threshold.

On the ground floor, open-plan living, dining and kitchen spaces flow together, while the main bedroom, cinema and lounge complete a fully self-contained level, giving accessibility without compromise.

The Result

The Rest Residence shows how strict estate guidelines, a difficult site and a demanding brief can produce a home that is modern, efficient and rooted in its landscape.
